Club History
Gillingham & District Angling Association was formed in the 1950’s with fishing on the River Stour only from Colesbrook to Highbridge Mill. Shortly after this members investigated the potential Trout fishing on the Shreen. In 1952 the club decided that it’s members should patrol the river to prevent poaching with rules in place to allow any member to approach those fishing to see their memberships. This rule is still in place to date. At this time the primary role of the club was to improve the fishing in the area for the benefit of everyone.,with subscriptions subsequently introduced. This ethos continues with regular work parties on the rivers and lakes that the club fishes.Initial stocking of Trout (4000) and coarse fish (8000) took place shortly after the club formed. This updating of stocks of fish has continued.
The stretches of the Stour fished by the club include Eccliffe Mill, which was sketched by the artist Constable on his visits to Gillingham. The river also runs through Stour Provost which has links to the Domesday Book, 1086, which recorded that the village had a mill. The mill was restored in 1988 and continues to work. The waterwheel dates from the 1880’s and was made at Bourton.
During the mid 1970’s the club started on the development of Lodden Lakes in Gillingham, initially with one lake and subsequently developing a 2nd. The club continues on a programme of upkeep on its waters through regular work parties.
The Angling club runs a number of matches, which include spring summer and winter series. It will also host a presentation for winners of cups and trophies as well as hosting an annual dinner for its riparian owners.
